How to Setup Exchange with SMTP Authentication:

To get better security, your ISP may ask to use SMTP authentication, it is easy to implement, here's how:


Setup a new connector:

  1. Start "Exchange system manager" and right click on "connectors".

  1. In "Properties" window, at "General" tab, add a descriptive name for the connection.
  2. Click to select "Forward all mail through this connector to the following smart hosts".
  3. Add the name of your provider's server name (smarthost).
  4. Click "Add..." button.

  6. Select your Exchange server and click OK.

  8. Under "Address space" tab, click "Add" button.

  10. Select SMTP and click OK.

  12. Leave E-mail Domain field at * and the cost at 1 and click OK.

  14. Under "Advanced" tab, click "Outbound security" button.

  16. Click "Basic authentication" and click "Modify" button.

  18. Type in the user name and password twice.

  19. Click OK to exit all menus.

If you added a connector, probably that one existed before. You should delete it or give it a higher routing cost than the one we just created.

To modify the old SMTP connector:

  1. Right-click on the old connector and click properties.
  2. Click on "Address space" tab.
  3. Choose the old SMTP and click modify.
  4. Change the cost to 10.

To delete to old SMTP connector:

  1. Right-click on the old SMTP connector and click delete.
  2. Click ok to confirm deletion.

That's it, the server will now send emails using a password protected SMTP connection.
